US Sports Leagues Oppose Internet Gambling Regulation

2 May 2007

A coalition of major amateur and professional sports leagues has formed a united front in lobbying against Rep. Barney Frank's efforts to regulate Internet gambling in the United States.

Led by lobbyist Martin Gold of lobbying firm Covington & Burling, the sports leagues say they will not support any legislation aimed at legalizing online sports gambling.

"We would also oppose any legislation that would legalize and regulate non-sports gambling online, because we do not believe that differential treatment of sports gambling and other gambling online would be sustainable in the current environment," Gold said in an e-mail to House Financial Services Committee members, reports The Hill.

The letter was signed by five major sports organizations, including the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Hockey League (NHL), the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), Major League Baseball (MLB) and the National Football League (NFL).
