Vegas Card Rooms Struggle to Fill Seats

All data is taken from their latest wave of research conducted in May 2008. The next wave is scheduled for December 2008. The presentation shows primarily the profile of players over the 12-month period prior to the research.

Despite the number of poker players in Las Vegas increasing by 16 percent year on year, according to Poker Players Research Ltd., or PPR, card rooms generally appear emptier because table numbers are growing three times faster than the number of players.

Bellagio Resort & Casino remains the busiest poker room, but perhaps surprisingly, Caesars Palace had the highest number of different players across the past year -- though many played there only once.

According to PPR, the top four customer-rated card rooms were at the Bellagio, The Mirage, The Venetian and Wynn Las Vegas.

Results show the demographic profile of the players in Vegas Casinos becoming slightly younger and more female. However, these trends are not as strong as those in other areas of poker such as in online money playing.

Of those who played poker in Las Vegas, 66 percent also play online for money on at least a weekly basis with 14 percent usually playing everyday.

The appeal of the card room appears to be influencing where visitors choose to stay, with 51 percent now saying that it is important/very important in their choice of hotel. These percentages are significantly higher among the top-rated rooms.

Ninety-four percent of people who play poker in Las Vegas card rooms also gamble on other games in the casino, with 31 percent of poker players also playing roulette, 31 percent playing craps, 63 percent playing blackjack and 63 percent playing slot machines.

Seventy-nine percent of poker players who have played in Vegas in the last year say that they expect to be back within the next 12 months, though with the current economic downturn, it is uncertain whether this number will hold true.
