The Age reported on Thursday that Victorians lost 4.8 billion Australian dollars on gambling last year, which is a record for the Australian state. Last year losses were 85 million Australian dollars less.
Players lost the largest amount, 2.6 billion Australian dollars, on poker machines in pubs and clubs, while Crown Casino, lotteries and wagering raked in the rest.
The Victorian government was able to use gambling revenue to put 1.6 billion Australia dollars into state coffers in taxes and levies.
