Viral Marketing to the Max

31 January 2001
webMillion.com, a play-for-fun games site, has developed a unique way to spark customers' imaginations.

The company just launched its "Marketing Millionaire" campaign, which it explains as a "promotion that puts a new twist on traditional Internet viral marketing by challenging members to spread the webMillion.com word beyond the Internet and e-mail inbox."

Customers are encouraged to devise creative ways to promote the site in return for prizes ranging from cash to camcorders. The company cautions customers, however, against doing anything too rash: "Remember, hellions: IF YOU LAND IN JAIL, WE CAN'T POST BAIL. Make good decisions. Play nice. Don't hurt anybody or anybody's stuff."

"The idea was sparked because we wanted to find another way to reward those who spread the webMillion word already and perhaps compel those who haven't," said webMillion COO Kenny Adcock. "We wanted to put a twist on our already successful Referral Rewards program and the traditional concept of viral marketing. Gaining market share doesn't have to be expensive, and if we have to pay to do it, it's a win-win situation to pay our members and challenge them to be creative beyond the computer screen."

Entries may be sent in the form of pictures, video and news clippings. Winning entries will be chosen by votes among the sites' players. The contest ends February 10.
