Testing, Contesting and Digesting

A collaborative research project from three groups that have closely monitored social issues related to Internet gambling revealed in July 2004 that the age verification systems from an alarmingly high percentage of online gambling operators were perhaps not up to par. The study--conducted by children's charity organization NCH, GamCare, which addresses the social impact of gambling, and ID authenticity specialist Citizencard--was an eye opener for many in the I-gaming space, especially considering the prominence and stature of some of the operators that failed the test. Seventeen months later, IGN has taken a firsthand look at how the problem is being addressed.

Online Poker Could Deliver $40m to Swedish Government

Swedish Vice Prime Minister Bosse Ringholm announced last week that his government has awarded domestic gaming and lotteries operator Svenska Spel a license to operate poker over the Internet for a two-year trial period. The move seemed inevitable as early as September when Ringholm told an audience at the 14th annual Spelakademin (Gaming Academy) that he would like Sweden's gaming operators to have the same opportunities as private foreign competitors.

Betfair Ready to Move forward Following Approval in Tasmania

Tasmania's Legislative Council voted unanimously on Nov. 24 to pass the Gaming Control Amendment (Betting Exchange) Bill, effectively making Tasmania Australia's first state to adopt a regulatory framework for betting exchanges. The passage of the law represents the final hurdle for British betting exchange Betfair, which has been lobbying for months to pass the legislation. The company will soon apply for a license to operate its betting exchange from Tasmania, where it hopes to be operational by the start of 2006.
