Another Weapon in the War Against Poor Customer Service

Good customer service isn't the online gaming business' strongest point. Some operators genuinely work at it and have developed a good reputation among players. Hindering the development of good customer care for many sites, however, is that their customer base is largely American, while the customer service representatives are not. Many sites employ residents from their idyllic island locales who aren't prepared to deal with the demands of American players.

More Cyber 'Anti-Bookies' Sprout in the U.K.

Bookmakers continue to be excluded from the newest wave of interactive betting sites coming out of the U.K. The latest two to announce the launching of new person-to-person wagering services are Betfair.com and Betmart.com. Both will go live with their sites this month. Plus, a new site from bookmaker Firststake plc will offer punters the ability to propose a bet, but not the odds.

On Wednesday, four leading "pro-family" leaders continued behind-the-scenes efforts on Capitol Hill to gain support for the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, H.R. 3125, by circulating a group letter calling for immediate action to pass the bill, which is the House version of the Kyl bill. Meanwhile, the U.S. House of Representatives Banking Committee has postponed its scheduled markup of the Internet Gambling Funding Prohibition Act (H.R. 4419).

May 17 Letter to Speaker Hastert

Dear Speaker Hastert:
We urge you to support H.R. 3125, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, and bring it to the House floor for immediate consideration. This legislation would make it illegal for gambling businesses to place a bet or knowingly assist someone in placing a bet over the Internet. H.R. 3125, as written, would clarify existing Federal law and prohibit wagering on the more than 700 current gambling sites that are already available over the Internet.

During a press conference yesterday, both Representative Chris Cannon, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, and Reverend Lou Sheldon, Chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition denounced the bill.

London Clubs Stays out of the Game... For Now

Despite rumors to the contrary, venerable casino operator London Clubs International plc (LCI) appears to be intent on keeping its distance from the Internet gambling industry. Perhaps in light of the company's ownership interest in the soon-to-open Aladdin property on the Las Vegas Strip, Chairman Alan Goodenough said this week that he was unwilling to "compromise LCI's long-established international reputation" and endanger the company's licensed status in various nations by precipitously launching an Internet betting site.

The governments of a few offshore licensing jurisdictions are unlikely to be pleased with their rankings as determined by the Working Group on Offshore Financial Centres. A report released in April and endorsed in March by the Financial Stability Forum grouped jurisdictions considered to have significant financial offshore activities into three categories reflecting their perceived quality of supervision and perceived degree of cooperation.
