Legislation that would create a licensing and taxation structure for Net betting has been proposed, a scenario that could earn the government an estimated $4 million to $5 million annually. In February 2000, former New Zealand gaming regulator Rick Smith was named the executive director for the Interactive Gaming Council, a trade association that seeks to establish fair business practices throughout the burgeoning online gaming industry. The ensuing eight months saw a lot of activity, with the IGC taking on several new members, implementing its seal of approval program and fielding a ton of criticism regarding complaints about a few of its members. Player Protection Policy for Tasmania

The Tasmanian government in August developed a draft set of player protection measures for online gambling and wagering, which was circulated to the various federal, state and territorial government bodies, as well as several political parties and all Tasmanian gaming license holders. The standards are intended to provide player protections and harm minimization measures in relation to interactive gaming and wagering. "Once it has been finalized it is hoped that the standards can be used in developing national uniform standards," said Paul Lennon, Tasmania's deputy premier and minister for racing and gaming.»

It's an exciting day for California-based Virtgame.com. Late yesterday afternoon the company received word that its online gaming system technology had received approval from the Nevada Gaming Control Board. With the Board's approval in hand, Virtgame can launch its Las Vegas-based online sportsbook to accept wagers from Nevada residents. Approval for Virtgame's software is pending, and likely to occur within a week followed by a 30-day field trial for full approval, according to Dennis Neilander of the Nevada Gaming Control Board.»
