SA Issues RFP for NGB

16 January 2001
The South African government has taken the next step in developing Internet gambling regulations by issuing a request for proposal to advise the National Gambling Board (NGB) on developing a draft legislative framework for interactive gambling, including a set of draft regulations.

The notice was published in national newspapers last week.

"We are expecting companies who think they have the requisite skill to submit their proposal by 12 February 2001," NGB CEO Sfiso Buthelezi explained. "There is no legislation yet, but the government will soon be making the necessary amendments."

It's been a long road to get to this point. In 1999, the government asked the NGB to take a look at Net betting, which led to the publication of a study in August 1999. By the end of 1999 the NGB recommended that the Minister of Trade and Industry should move toward interactive gambling regulation. The Minister subsequently asked the NGB to draft a national legislative framework for interactive gambling for consideration.
