The EBA's New Battleground: Spain

As confirmed last week, the European Betting Association will file a complaint with the European Commission against Spain's lottery operator, Loterias y Apuestas del Estado, charging that the denial of private operators' ability to access the Spanish market violates EU free trade laws. The association has already filed similar cases against eight other European member states, including Spain, France, Holland, Sweden, Finland, Germany and other states that uphold state-run betting monopolies.

A Pivotal Time for Betfair

Key policy decisions soon to come in Europe and Australia will have a major impact on the future for British betting exchange Betfair. Perhaps the single most important event on the company's radar screen will occur at home, where it is waiting to learn whether the U.K. Treasury will enact a higher tax rate on betting exchanges (a decision that could be revealed as early as November). Meanwhile, negotiations to become a fully-licensed operator in Tasmania continue beyond the government's original deadline. Premier Paul Lennon says that a definitive decision will be made by Dec. 1 so that the necessary regulations can be pushed through the legislature before the close of the session. And amid all of this, the company has opted to postpone its planned float--a decision followed by the resignation of its CEO.

Internet fantasy sports provider RotoPlay, Inc. in June filed a complaint in a U.S. district court against juggernaut online gambling company Sportingbet, alleging that Sportingbet copied two of Rotoplay's fantasy sports lottery games and ran them on some of its Web sites. The British company responded last week with a motion to dismiss.
