Cherry Split in the Works

The Board of Swedish gambling firm Cherryforetagen AB (CHERb.ST) will propose a plan at its general meeting in the first quarter of 2006 to split the company into three independently listed companies. The three distinct divisions--Cherry Online, Net Entertainment and Cherry Casino--are already independent operations with limited benefits from collaboration, but the board feels that the three branches could be developed more rapidly and stronger on their own. A split would also provide better transparency of the different businesses and allow shareholders to choose their desired risk level and area of operations.»

The Netherlands Administrative Court of Breda rendered a monumental decision on Dec. 2 in a case that could have a tremendous impact on future gambling-related court rulings and policy decisions in the country. The court ruled that the defendants of the case--the Dutch Minister of Justice and Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs--failed to prove that the country's state-run monopoly system for casino gaming is consistent and coherent in attaining its intended goals and therefore restricts freedom of services in an illegal way.»

European Commission Vice President Gunter Verheugen recently sent a letter to the Dutch government concerning its plan to award Holland Casino a three-year license to exclusively operate games of chance over the Internet. Verheugen's letter warns the Netherlands against proceeding with its proposed monopoly scheme for online games of chance, advising that such a policy would not be compatible European Laws that establish the freedom to provide services in other member states.»
