NCAA Brings the War against Gambling to Internet Sportsbooks

The "madness" of March has been exacerbated for a few sportsbook operators and their associates. BBF International, SBG Global, Inovasis, Inc., Jeffrey Postal and Richard Mendelson have been slapped with trademark infringement suits by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for unauthorized use of NCAA trademarks, including the phrase "March Madness" on their sites or as part of a domain name.

California Reenters the Prohibition Club

This week has seen prohibition efforts go into overdrive, with California being the latest to join the Net betting prohibition club. Assembly Bill 1229, introduced on February 23 by Assembly Member Dario Frommer (D-Glendale), however, is an even more expansive bill than those introduced recently in the Oregon legislature. The California bill targets operators of gambling sites, as well as their players, whereas the Oregon bills mainly focuses on payment methods used for online gambling.

Gamblers' Case against Visa, MasterCard Dismissed

Judge Stanwood R. Duval Jr. of the U.S. District Court in New Orleans has dismissed two class action suits brought against MasterCard International and Visa International for debts incurred by players on Internet casino sites. The two cases are the first federal attempt to tackle the issue of whether credit card companies can collect payment for customers' gambling debts.
