Desktop Conference: Opportunities in Vanuatu
16 February 2001
As the status of online gambling in Australia remains in limbo--at least until the federal government's 12-month moratorium on Internet gaming expansion ends in May--many of those casino operators left without a place to base their businesses are weighing the pros and cons of setting up shop offshore. For those who choose to go that route, the Island nation of Vanuatu a few thousand miles east of Australia is a viable alternative. The country, which models its online gambling regulatory system somewhat after that of Australia, is currently accepting license applications.

IGN Publisher Sue Schneider had a chance last month to chat with Geoff Sheehan, Vanuatu Interactive Gaming Corp.'s manager for licensing review and auditing, about what the jurisdiction has to offer online gambling businesses. The recording conference, along with handout material, is available for listening exclusively at IGN. It's complementary for subscribers and $20 for guests.

Efforts to prohibit Internet gambling in the United States have risen again on Capitol Hill. U.S. Rep. James Leach, R-Iowa, yesterday reintroduced the Internet Gambling Funding Prohibition Bill. The congressman cosponsored the same bill last year, although it died in committee. Many industry experts say that, out of all the I-gaming prohibition bills to receive consideration in Congress, the Leach bill presents the biggest threat to online gambling businesses because it seeks to cut of the lifeblood of interactive gambling--the transfer of funds.
