Florida Company Plans Online Gambling Cruises

SeaEscape Entertainment Inc., which operates a "cruise to nowhere" ship from Port Everglades to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida has announced plans to capitalize on its large customer base by launching an Internet casino.

A New Threat

Internet gambling is once again under legislative assault. Leading the charge this time are reps. John Conyers (D-MI) and Chris Cannon (R-UT). Working with the U.S. Department of Justice and at the behest of the Clinton Administration, Representatives Conyers and Cannon have introduced a new Bill that, like its counterpart offered by Sen. Kyl and Rep. Goodlatte, would prohibit the acceptance of wagers over the Internet. However, unlike the Goodlatte bill, which is hamstrung by carve-outs and new burdens on ISPs, the Cannon-Conyers bill is a straight amendment to the Wire Act.

Ireland Prepares to Update Gaming Policies

In an effort to bring Ireland's gaming policies up to speed, John O'Donoghue , the Irish minister for justice, equality and law reform, last year established the Interdepartmental Group, a panel designated to reviewing the country's 1956 Gaming and Lotteries Act. The product of their research is 108-page report published by O'Donoghue in June. Interactive gambling received considerable attention.

Racing Task Force Commences in Ohio

Members of the newly formed Racing Commissioners International Special Task Force To Investigate Betting Rebates met earlier this month for the first time in Cincinnati, Ohio. Although the 37-member group was originally created to conduct a broad investigation into the extent of offshore betting over the Internet and telephone, members indicated during the meeting that they felt the largest threat facing the racing industry is posed by rebates given to off-track bettors, some of which offer rebates of up to 10 percent.

Jamaica Considers Net Betting License Applications

Jamaica may soon be issuing Internet gambling licenses. The Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission has already received at least three applications, although no licenses will be issued until the necessary legislation is in place, said Dennis Chung, one of the commissioners. "Let's put it this way," he added, "we're not turning back applications."

Zaplets Illustrate New Email Possibilities

In August of 1999, a new software company called FireDrop was created in Redwood Shores, CA upon a new technological wonder known as the Zaplet. A high-tech incubator called "Relativity" developed the concept. Brian Axe, 31, was the member of this group who finally made the necessary moves to capitalize on the idea. Axe became partners with David Roberts, 36, who originally worked for the CIA, at a houseboat party. The two secretly began to set up their own company and patented the Zaplet.
