eLottery Helps Lotteries Generate Web Revenue

U.S. lotteries maintain a huge presence on the Web, but none of them sell tickets online. Since lotteries depend solely on ticket sales to generate revenue, the huge presence isn't earning anyone a dime. Official lottery websites receive millions of hits each month, but none of those clicks are generating any ad revenue. The situation may change when lotteries use eLottery's IMARCS marketing program. (IMARCS is the an acronym for Internet marketing, analysis, research and communications system.)

The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, the Goodlatte bill, took a back seat today in the House Judiciary Committee to an abortion measure and another piece of proposed legislation on the docket ahead of the Internet matter. Meanwhile, a panel appointed by Congress to consider whether and how to tax the Internet broke up after what the Washington Post described as "an acrimonious two-day session" without reaching any substantive agreement on any of the major points it discussed.

Today, there are at least 400 virtual casino gaming sites on the Internet run by up to 200 different operators. Internet gaming revenues worldwide have been estimated to exceed $810 million this year. In 2002, that revenue projection surpasses $3 billion, with some estimates reaching as high as $10 billion by 2003. With revenues like those, it is no wonder that companies from around the world are positioning themselves for a piece of the action and jurisdictions from Australia to the British Isles to Kahnawake are licensing, regulating and taxing Internet gaming with various regulatory schemes.

No Duty Relief for U.K. Bookmakers

U.K. bookmakers' hopes for a lower betting duty were dashed today when the Treasury's new budget announcement made no such reference. Instead, the government is considering basing duty on gross profits and where the actual wager was placed, Accounting Web reported.

Crackdown in South Korea

The South Korean government has launched a massive effort to block its citizens' access to online gaming sites, while admitting that the feat is nearly impossible. The government discovered a Korean virtual gambling site in January, which has led to the crackdown, according to The Korea Times. Internet businesses were also complaining that employees were gambling online while at work.

eTrouble for eConnect

The Securities and Exchange Commission has put the freeze on eConnect. Trading of the California-based e-commerce company's stock was halted March 13 due to suspicion that the company was issuing false and misleading press releases to artificially inflate its share price. Additionally, the company has been hit with at least three class action lawsuits filed on behalf of shareholders.

Lasseters Looks to Raise a Few Bucks

Lasseters Holdings Ltd. is attempting to raise A$40 million for a proposed expansion into Europe and Asia by offering 40 million shares at $1.00 each. The stock offering includes 10 million existing shares and 30 million new shares. The offering gives Lasseters a market capitization of $117.5 million on listing on the Australian Stock Exchange with the current shareholders retaining 66 percent of the equity.

SportXction Bound for Interactive Media

International Sports Wagering, Inc. (ISWI) today announced an exclusive licensing deal allowing German-based Global Interactive Gaming, Inc. (GIG) to market, distribute and operate ISWI's interactive SportXction software, technology and patents on the Internet and interactive television, for contests and wagering on sporting events worldwide. The licenses exclude the continued use of SportXction in Nevada for wagering and the application of the company's basic technology and patens to lotteries and financial transactions.
