Online Gambling Debts Challenged Again in California

With the filing of a new lawsuit Monday, California courts are once again examining the enforceability of credit card debts accrued through online gambling. Marino vs. American Express, filed in the Marin County California Superior Court, alleges that during the summer of 1998, California resident Fred Marino surfed his way to more than $25,000 in online gambling debts.

Email with Cookies Has Privacy Advocates in an Uproar

A new "cookie" scare has privacy pundits in an uproar. Novell CEO Eric Schmidt recently announced that his credit card number had once been stolen, probably by a cookie attached to an email, according to reports in ZDNet. In fact, consumer and privacy advocates have asked the Federal Trade Commission to close software loopholes that potentially allow bulk emailers to identify consumers through "cookie" technology.

Florida AG Seeks Credit Card Companies' Help in Stopping Online Gambling

The Florida Office of the Attorney General recently contacted Visa and MasterCard requesting the companies' assistance in the AG's battle against online gambling. In its letter to the credit card companies, the AG's office outlined Florida regulations that make it not only illegal to participate in online gambling, but explain that Florida law prohibits credit card companies from collecting gambling debts from their users. Additionally, Florida law allows suits to be filed against any entity which assists in the transaction, such as a credit card company.

E.tec Buys Back Shares from Waterhouse Family

E.tec is buying out major stockholders Bill and Robbie Waterhouse and their family to the tune of $6 million, according to a Sydney Morning Herald article. The company will buy back 45 million shares for about $4.5 million with $1.5 million tossed in as an anti-compete deal sweetener. The Waterhouse family will probably be offered an options package down the road.
