U.K. Bookmakers' Committee Pleads for a Tax Break

On January 28, the United Kingdom's Bookmakers' Committee of the Horseracing Betting Levy Board issued an urgent call for reduction of the U.K. betting duty.. The Committee, which represents the entire U.K. bookmaking industry, recommends lowering the duty to 3 percent from the current rate of 6.75 percent and has sent the Treasury reports commissioned from Europe Economics and independent consultancies MMD Ltd.

Capping an initial phase of federal undercover and financial investigations into offshore sports bookmakers whose activities violate federal tax and anti-racketeering laws, Audrey Fleissig, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, announced today that two California individuals and a Nevada corporation have just pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri to multiple federal felonies, agreed to forfeit millions of dollars in assets, and agreed to pay millions of dollars in back taxes, interest and penalties.

A New Hub for Net Betting Prosecutions?

While World Sports Exchange's Jay Cohen awaits his February 14 trial for allegedly violating the Federal Interstate Wire Act in the Southern District of New York in 1998, a second case has opened--and shut--in the Eastern District of Missouri. The proprietors of Paradise Casino, an Internet and telephone sportbook, pleaded guilty on January 26 in a St. Louis federal court to charges of violating the Wire Wager Act, money laundering and endeavoring to impair or obstruct the IRS Administration of the Internal Revenue Code. According to the prosecutor, Assistant U.S Attorney Mike Fagan, the case could be the first of many to be heard in St. Louis.

William Hill Offshore Launches

British bookmaker William Hill yesterday launched its new offshore telephone account betting service by giving away free mobile phones to the first 10,000 people to place bets with the new service. And the bookmaking firm's customers will pay a mandatory deduction of just three percent to cover administrative charges, rather than the current standard nine percent betting tax in English betting shops or over the telephone.

Youbet.com recently reached an agreement with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office following the investigation of its operations by various California law enforcement agencies. Although the original search warrant that was issued in the beginning of this case has been sealed, the actual judgment is public record, and IGN has obtained a copy.
