McCain Reintroduces College Sports Betting Ban

While Nevada legislators are close to legalizing Internet gambling in the Silver State, their Oregonian counterparts are taking the alternative path. An amended version of Senate Bill 755, a bill that aims to prohibit online gambling, was passed in the Oregon Senate and is headed to the House. The bill's author, Sen. Rick Metsger, says the success of the bill, depends on which committee the bill lands in.

After nearly seven hours of negotiating on Friday, the Intercontinental Bookmaking Organization and the 2004 Olympic Sports Ethics Commission have come to terms on what presence wagering will have at the upcoming Summer Games. In exchange for the IBO agreeing to withdraw its commercial presence from anywhere within 1,000 meters of all facilities that host Olympic events, the Commission has agreed to include cockfighting--a sport geared specifically for wagering--as an exhibition sport. A 39-pound rooster named "Señor Peck-a-lot" has already been penciled in as the favorite at 5-2 odds.

Highly Anticipated Fallout Down Under

Ever since Australian Prime Minister John Howard announced earlier this week his intention to seek a permanent ban on interactive gambling services, a hue and cry of protest has broken out across the Australian continent. The proposed law would make it illegal for Australian operators to take bets from Australian residents, but it would enable them to continue operating using a customer base of players located outside Australia.
