Worldnet Casinos Comes under Fire

A New Jersey resident is suing Worldnet Casinos, operators of Casinopirata.com, for failing to pay him his winnings. The player, James Lutz, says he opened a wagering account at Casinopirata.com and eventually won a $50,000 jackpot. He says he contacted the managers and operators of the cyber casino by telephone and email and was repeatedly put off.»
Michigan Anti-Net Betting Ads Are off the Mark

The Michigan Department of Community Health recently launched a $2 million public service ad campaign aimed at warning Michigan residents about the dangers of problem gambling. The focus of the TV commercials, not surprisingly, is Internet gambling, but the results of a study conducted by researchers at Western Michigan University indicate that the Department could have spent its money much more wisely.»

Prohibition Effort Faces Continued Adversity

The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, reportedly bound for mark-up in the House Tuesday, will have to endure a few sizeable bumps in the road before cruising to the White House. One of the act's recently acquired opponents, Christian Coalition, voiced its disapproval in a letter delivered to the Committee on the Judiciary Chairman Henry Hyde on Thursday. As of Friday, the Coalition gained a few unlikely allies in the National Association of Convenience Stores, the Service Station Dealers Association and the National Licensed Beverage Association, all of which oppose the lottery carve-out, none of which are too interested in seeing lottery ticket sales plunge at gas stations and convenient stores.»

The government discovered a Korean virtual gambling site in January, which has led to the crackdown, according to The Korea Times. Trading of the California-based e-commerce company's stock was halted March 13 due to suspicion that the company was issuing false and misleading press releases to artificially inflate its share price. Lasseters Holdings Ltd. is attempting to raise A$40 million for a proposed expansion into Europe and Asia by offering 40 million shares at $1.00 each. The stock offering includes 10 million existing shares and 30 million new shares. The offering gives Lasseters a market capitization of $117.5 million on listing on the Australian Stock Exchange with the current shareholders retaining 66 percent of the equity.»
